Start The School Year Prepared

Cara Law- Estate and Life Planning
Summer is winding down and it is that time of year again, when college students are heading to campus.  As the parent of 3 young adults, I understand the mix of emotions you are feeling as you send your children out into the world.

When my kids went off to college, my biggest worry was not being able to help them if an emergency arose.  And of course, the day came when the phone rang and one of my daughters had been rushed to the hospital with a high fever. While I was driving (at a very high rate of speed), I was trying to get in touch with the doctors treating her but, because she was legally an adult, I had trouble getting someone to talk to me before I arrived.

This situation could happen to you at any moment, when you get the dreaded call that something has happened to your child. With some preparation and the right plan in place, you can avoid not being able to talk to someone who can give you information about your child.

From my own experience, as each of my kids left the nest, I lost the ability to access their financial school records without authorization for them,  even though I was paying the bills!   All that was needed was a simple legal document called a financial power of attorney. Each of my kids gave me permission to handle their tuition and manage their banking back at home, if necessary.

For accessing medical records and being able to speak to a medical professional about your child, a Health Care Proxy is equally as important.  As a parent, you want to make sure that you are the person authorized to make medical decisions that impact your child, even as they become an adult.

Giving your children a head start preparing for their future is an invaluable gift to them and to you.
